Choosing a pre-owned Omega Speedmaster

Introduced in 1957, the Speedmaster was designed as a racing chronograph, with the tachymeter scale on the bezel rather than the dial. In 1965 it was qualified by NASA for crewed space missions, and in 1969 it became the first watch worn on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission, which is why it’s known as the Moonwatch.

Speedmaster models

The Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional keeps the hand-wound movement and design of the watch that went to the Moon, and since 2021 it has used the Master Chronometer calibre 3861. Automatic Speedmasters, such as the Speedmaster Racing and the smaller Speedmaster Reduced, offer the same look with a self-winding movement.

Hesalite or sapphire?

The Moonwatch is offered with a hesalite crystal, as on the original, or with sapphire crystals front and back for a view of the movement. Hesalite has the vintage look, and sapphire resists scratches.
